Water resources require extra attention during the planning process of a development as well as during the actual grading and construction activity. Setbacks are required from lakes, creeks, and wetlands to help reduce the impact of structures and pavement. Buffers and hard surface limitations may be required to reduce and filter runoff as well as preserve upland vegetation.

Additional requirements such as treatment of stormwater runoff through ponding, rain gardens or other means may also be required. Maintaining a buffer of undisturbed vegetation during construction adjacent to lakes, wetlands, creeks, streets, ditches, channels, and other water courses as well as providing temporary cover over exposed soil through tarps, mulch, or seeding can help prevent sediment from passing downstream and reaching protected waters.
