Air quality at the Minnetonka Ice Arena

A February 2011 “Today Show” investigative report on NBC raised concerns about the air quality at indoor ice arenas. The staff at the city-owned Minnetonka Ice Arena considered this issue several years ago and had already taken steps to ensure the safety of skaters and visitors.

  • All of the ice resurfacers and ice edgers used at the arena are electric and do not emit any harmful exhaust fumes.
  • Prior to using all electric equipment, Minnetonka Ice Arena’s air quality measurements consistently met or exceeded current state standards for air quality. The ice arena air quality was measured weekly by staff and that data was submitted quarterly to the Minnesota Department of Health.

If you have further questions about indoor air quality at the Minnetonka Ice Arenas, please contact John Heckmann, ice arena manager, at 952.939.8315 or via email at jheckmann@eminnetonka.com.
