Garbage

A garbage can and bag of garbage set at the curb. All Minnetonka residents and businesses are required to have proper refuse disposal. Minnetonka has an open hauling refuse system which means that residents and businesses contract directly with a licensed refuse hauler.  For a list of licensed haulers see below.

Haulers must provide three levels of service (based on volume) and separate collection of yard trimmings during the growing season. There may be an additional charge for yard trimming disposal.  Haulers set their collection days.

The city provides recycling service to single family and townhome units and operates the recycling drop-off center with the city of Hopkins. City ordinances require apartment and condominium owners or managers to provide their residents the opportunity to recycle. See the recycling page

Recycling and careful buying can reduce the amount of waste, packaging and garbage from your home.

Minnetonka Residential Refuse Haulers

State law requires all homes have weekly garbage collection service. In Minnetonka, our open garbage system allows for residents to contract directly with one of the licensed companies offering residential garbage and yardwaste collection.

The companies must offer at least three levels of service based on volume (usually called one, two or three can service or 30, 45–60 or 95 gallon wheeled carts) and pick up yardwaste during the growing season. The companies may charge extra for yardwaste collection, the rates vary by company, as does the service level you may select. (Several of the haulers have an annual fee to pickup yardwaste from your curb mid April through November.)

The following companies are licensed to pick up residential garbage in Minnetonka.

Garbage haulers set the day when your garbage and yardwaste are collected.

Recycling and careful purchasing practices can reduce the amount of waste, packaging and garbage from your home. Residents should contract for the level of garbage service needed for their household. This will save you money each month.

Please Note: All garbage, yardwaste and recycling containers must be stored out of public view except for the evening before and day of collection.

Waste Hauling notes

The city of Minnetonka provides weekly recycling service. See inside covers of the Recyclopedia. Collection of recycling is Monday if you live west of I-494 and Tuesday if you live east of I-494.

The garbage hauler sets the day they collect garbage. Not all haulers service all parts of the city.

The garbage haulers are required to offer at least three levels of service based on volume, either a “one can” or “two can” or “three can” or a 95 gallon, 60 gallon, 45 or 30 gallon refuse cart.

Recycling and smart shopping can reduce the amount of packaging waste generated by your household. Select a volume level of garbage service that works for your household with this in mind.

The garbage haulers are required to provide the separate curbside collection of yardwaste (leaves, bundles of branches, grass clippings, garden plants, weeds) during the growing season. The hauler may charge additional for this service. Please check with your hauler for details.

Minnetonka operates a brush drop-off program for residents mid April through mid November. Minnetonka also operates a spring and a fall leaf drop-off program. Check your Minnetonka Memo, the brush drop-off page or call the Recycling Coordinator, 952 939-8217.

Hennepin County provides a program to drop-off household hazardous waste. Please check the Recyclopedia, pages 16 and 17. (Hennepin County 24 hour HHW information line: 612 348-3777.)

If you have questions about garbage, recycling, household hazardous waste or other areas relating to garbage, please call the Recycling Coordinator, 952.988.8430.
