Trends
Population
- The city experienced significant growth since 1980. Current population is estimated at 51,519.
- The number of households increased between 1980 and 2000, but at much higher rates than population.
- Since 1980:
- The dominant household type has shifted from married couples with children under 18 to married couples with no children under 18.
- The number of single person households has increased substantially, at a rate higher than any other household type.
- The percentage of minorities has increased and now represents 11% of the city’s 2000 population.
- Minnetonka’s population has been aging; nearly 25% of the population was over 55 in 2000, compared to 19% in 1990.
Employment
- Since 1980 the number of total jobs in Minnetonka substantially increased from 18,175 to 45,706 (2006 estimate).
Implications
- Additional population growth may not be great because of lack of undeveloped land.
- Needs:
- Provide additional services and land uses to respond to an aging population, empty nesters and more single-family households.
- Investigate strategies and programs to attract and maintain families with children as residents.
- Investigate potential additional or expanded services for minority and immigrant populations.
- If employment growth slows, we need to examine opportunities to attract and grow businesses.
